| View in browser 8th Edition, September 2026 Newsletter on climate change and human health in Europe   Healthcare on the climate frontline   Europe’s health systems are increasingly on the frontline of climate change. Our recently published analysis of Heat exposure of hospitals shows that 87% of assessed healthcare facilities already experience temperatures above 30°C, while the number exposed to temperatures over 40°C could increase fivefold by 2050. At the same time, healthcare contributes around 4.3% of national greenhouse gas emissions in the EU on average, mostly through supply chains.   The new Observatory section Climate change mitigation in the health sector highlights opportunities to reduce these emissions through cleaner energy, efficient buildings, sustainable procurement, transport and waste management.   Adaptation and mitigation must therefore go hand in hand. Renovating hospitals, improving cooling and using renewable energy can protect patients and staff from extreme heat while reducing emissions and costs. The need to translate these opportunities into coordinated action is now gaining attention at the highest political level.   In the 2026 State of the Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a forthcoming European Heatwave Plan. The EU Health Security Committee also issued an opinion on heat with recommendations to strengthen heat preparedness, while more than 80 organisations have endorsed the European Declaration on Heat and Health. The Observatory will continue to support these efforts by providing trusted evidence, practical examples and tools that turn climate-health knowledge into action.
