2026 is set to be a pivotal year for climate change adaptation in the European Union. As of 1 January, Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with climate resilience identified as a core strategic priority. In addition, the first-ever EU-wide legislative proposals on adaptation will be presented as part of the upcoming integrated framework for climate risk and resilience. The current public consultation is a vital opportunity to share your views: Climate ADAPT community members are strongly encouraged to contribute before the consultation closes on 23 February.

The EEA’s inaugural European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA) published in 2024 forms an important part of the evidence base for the integrated framework for climate and resilience. Work is now underway on the second edition of the climate risk assessment, known as ‘EUCRA-2’. See the updates below and on Climate-ADAPT for more details. In June 2025, the EEA made climate change adaptation knowledge more accessible across Europe by sharing the platform in all 24 official EU languages, as well as Norwegian, Icelandic, and Turkish (using machine-based translation, accessible from the top right of the Climate-ADAPT homepage). Since this expansion significantly improves access to vital climate information and learning resources for regional and local authorities, we encourage our community to widely promote this new navigation option in national languages.

Climate resilience policy and planning is also advancing in policy sectors at national levels, such as in the forestry sector in Sweden. Such examples support peer learning and boost take-up of solutions in vulnerable sectors in the EU.
